It is necessary to take care of the south direction

First of all, it is important to know that the practice of Yama on the day of Dhanteras is very important from a religious point of view. For Yama, a four-faced lamp of flour is made and kept in the south direction at the main gate of the house.

Chant this mantra by lighting a Yama lamp

While lighting the lamp of Yama, ‘Mrityunam Dandpashabhayam Kalen Shyamaya Sah. Trayodashyam Deepadanat Suryajah Priyatam Mam’. Mantra should be chanted.

Mythology related to the worship of Yama

Once Yama asked his messengers that do you have pity on anyone while killing the lives of living beings? The eunuchs said in hesitation, no sir. Then Yamraj, giving him protection, said, do not be afraid, tell the truth. Then the eunuchs told that once his heart was really scared while taking someone’s life. The messengers told Yama that once a king named Hans went for hunting and went astray to border of another kingdom. Hema, ruler of that state, gave great hospitality to King Hans. On the same day King Hema’s wife gave birth to a son. Astrologers calculated constellation and told that this child would die after four days of marriage. By order of King Hans, that child was kept as a celibate in a cave on the banks of Yamuna and it was ordered that no woman’s shadow should reach him.

How did the prince die?

The rule of law is unshakable. One day the young daughter of King Hans went to the banks of the Yamuna and married Gandharva to that celibate child. The prince died on the fourth day of marriage. Messengers said, we had never seen such a beautiful couple and seeing lamentation of that woman, our tears also came out.

Then Yama told the way to avoid premature death

Yamraj said, ‘Worshiping Dhanteras and completing the lamp donation methodically, one gets rid of premature death. The fear of premature death ends in the house where this worship is done. Since then, the practice of lamp donation along with Dhanvantari worship started on the day of Dhanteras for eternity.
